He knows first-hand the value of a great domain name.
In September 2022, entrepreneur Ankur Nagpal wrote a string of tweets offering an insight into the various things he would do differently when launching his next startup.
Nagpal, who sold his previous startup Teachable for a reported $250 million, mentioned in the thread of tweets that he would spend money acquiring a premium domain in the early days of a startup. Citing his previous purchase of Teachable.com, Nagpal said that a great domain “makes everyone take you seriously.”
The serial entrepreneur has followed his own advice with his latest startup, Ocho. Ocho means eight in Spanish.
Ocho, which is still under development, is a company that helps business owners to build wealth through the use of financial and educational products under the Ocho umbrella. From a fully managed retirement account to a collection of courses designed to help entrepreneurs take control of their personal finances, Ocho takes a holistic approach to the relationship between entrepreneurs and money.
The company, which aims to produce generational wealth for clients, has positioned its brand on the Ocho.com domain name.
This premium domain was previously owned and operated by a gambling brand, but Archive.org records suggest the name has been dormant for several years.
It’s difficult to pinpoint when Nagpal secured Ocho.com for his latest startup. Whois history shows that the domain moved to a privacy-protected GoDaddy account in the first few months of 2022. However, the same Whois data suggests that Ocho.com’s nameservers changed to those currently used by Nagpal’s startup in September 2022.
This is yet another example of a financial brand acquiring a premium domain name before fully launching, following in the footsteps of Embed and Wealth.
Nagpal is no stranger to understanding the benefits of a premium domain name. Teachable, mentioned above, started life as Fedora in 2013 operating on UseFedora.com.
The company rebranded to Teachable in 2015 with $3 million of seed funding under its belt. According to Nagpal, Teachable’s conversion rate dramatically jumped after switching from UseFedora.com to Teachable.com.
Under Ocho.com, Nagpal’s new startup will enjoy all the benefits of operating on a premium domain name from day one.
