£1m London age tech startup tackles over 60s isolation with NHS partnership

London based age tech startup Mirthy has raised £1m funding via venture capital and aims to tackle isolation and loneliness among over 60s in the UK.

Launched in 2020 by Alex Ramamurthy and Dhruv Haria, Mirthy is an online learning and events community for over 60s that offers an “accessible and fun way for people to connect over shared interests and hobbies”.

Mirthy now has a growing community of 30,000 members and the business has been part of several prestigious accelerator programmes (University of Cambridge Social Ventures Incubator), and has received over £1m in funding from venture capital funds.

Since launch, Mirthy has formed a partnership with McCarthy Stone, the private retirement housing builder, supporting their 20,000 homeowners with online lectures and events.

The company also has a close partnership with the NHS Retirement Fellowship, serving their 7000+ members across the UK during and since the pandemic and have teamed up with several local Age UKs to offer free access over the winter months to their beneficiaries.

COO Dhruv Haria commented: “Technology has the power to broaden our parents’ worlds to new ideas and inspiration, enable them to connect and make new friends anywhere over shared interests, and participate in community once they are no longer in full time work, in an easy and accessible manner.

“With technology adoption and use increasing rapidly amongst my parents’ generation, I am keen to use my background to innovate suitable technology solutions to combat social isolation and loneliness in society.”

CEO Alex Ramamurthy added: “While dialogue around an ageing population focuses on the growing burden on health services, my experience sees a generation of people with more energy, desire for life and time than ever before.

“I want Mirthy to join people on this journey once they are no longer in full-time work and be there for them every step of the way!”
